Energy efficiency study

Case study: Construction of a new sports hall in Paris

Sports halls serve a wide range of users, and that means a wide range of requirements. The results of the study on the construction of a new sports hall in Paris can be found here.

Considerations for heating and cooling sports halls

Different events and activities also bring different requirements. Athletes often need slightly cooler temperatures, while spectators and participants in other events prefer warmer conditions. At the same time, the heating and cooling solution must be durable and safe to use, for example during ball sports. Other important factors include flexible room layouts and aesthetic considerations that make sports halls appealing as event venues.

As most sports halls are municipal projects, they are subject to strict sustainability requirements. In line with building energy regulations, it is essential to use long-lasting technical systems, and each sports hall should set a benchmark for future municipal developments.

The results of the study on...

... Energy consumption

Findings of the study

The most energy-efficient heating system combines radiant ceiling panels with heat pumps, reducing energy consumption by up to 45% compared to other systems. When gas is used as the energy source, radiant ceiling panels combined with a gas boiler offer the most effective solution. Compared to a hot water radiator, using radiant ceiling panels as heat emitters saves around 15% in energy.

... Development of costs

Findings of the study

Radiant ceiling panels with heat pumps have the highest initial investment cost, while gas heating systems require the lowest. However, in just under three years, the lower running costs of radiant ceiling panels with heat pumps offset their higher upfront cost compared to gas heaters.

Over a 15-year lifespan, radiant ceiling panels with heat pumps can reduce total costs by up to 55% compared to other heating systems. When combined with gas boilers, they still achieve savings of up to 50%.

...CO2 emissions

Findings of the study

The heating system with the lowest CO₂ emissions combines radiant ceiling panels with heat pumps. Compared to other systems, this setup can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 67%. In second place are radiant ceiling panels with gas boilers, which still achieve savings of up to 22%.
