Tips for minimising condensation and reducing mould in your home

Condensation can make your home damp and lead to mould, which isn't good for your house or your health. Minimising the build-up of moisture and being more aware of your indoor air quality can help you maintain a comfortable and healthy living environment.

Here are some helpful tips on helping you to control humidity in your home.

1. Refresh the Air

Make it a habit to open all windows frequently, even just a little, allowing fresh air in and moisture out. This practice reduces humidity, which can lead to condensation and mould. Try to do this before turning on the heating to warm fresh rather than stale air.

2. Manage CO2 and Humidity in Living Spaces

In rooms where people gather, such as bedrooms and living areas, it's important to keep trickle vents open and a window as much as is comfortable. This practice helps to reduce the build-up of carbon dioxide and humidity, ensuring better air quality and preventing condensation.

Open windows regularly.

3. Invest in Moisture-Absorbing Plants

Plants like Peace Lilies, Snake Plants, Spider Plants, Aloe Vera, and Boston Ferns can play a part in reducing room humidity, and help purify the air, making them excellent additions to any indoor space.

4. Effective Use of Extract Fans

Keep extract fans in kitchens and bathrooms turned on to efficiently reduce air moisture, and be sure to turn on cooker hoods whilst cooking. Clean these vents at least once or twice a year to ensure they are working properly.

Consider incorporating plants.

5. Mindful Laundry Practices

Avoid drying clothes indoor it at all possible. If using a tumble dryer, ensure it is vented outside to prevent moisture being drawn into your home.

6. Maintain a Consistent Climate

Keeping a consistent temperature throughout your home is key to avoiding condensation and mould outbreaks. Aim to create a balanced indoor climate throughout your home.

Avoid drying clothes indoors.

7. Check Loft and Wall Insulation

Cold spots on walls and ceilings can attract condensation, which can develop into mould. Check your wall and loft cavities to ensure they are appropriately insulated.

8. Upgrade Home Ventilation

If your extract fans are over 10 years old, consider replacing them. Modern fan technology offers improved performance and efficiency, including humidity sensing technology, which can make a significant difference in moisture control. If you continue to experience issues, consider upgrading to a whole house ventilation system.

Check for cold spots on ceilings and walls.

9. Maintain Your Radiators

Check your radiators are in good working order, as they play a crucial role in maintaining a comfortable and dry home environment. Bleed them if cold at the top and consider professional flushing if cold at the bottom. Properly functioning radiators can save on heating bills and provide better heat distribution.

10. Tackle Mould Breakouts Promptly

If you notice mould on walls or window frames, address it immediately. Clean the area with warm soapy water, allow it to dry, and then use a mould and mildew spray or fungicidal wash. Good ventilation is essential to prevent future occurrences.

Check and maintain your radiators.

By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can significantly enhance moisture control in your home.
